Subsurface ocean biases in climate models and its implications in the simulated interannual variability: A case study for Indian Ocean

First attempt made for cautiously noting the role of inherent deep ocean biases in climate models and its impact in simulated frequency and amplitude of events such as ENSO and IODZMs. Analysis of the impacts of deep ocean biases in CMIP-5 models and its role in simulated interannual variability and large scale air-sea interaction dynamics have been performed. Air Quality Crisis: A Tale of Two Mega Cities, Delhi and Beijing

An objective evaluation of dangerous air pollutant PM2.5(particle size ≤ 2.5μm), for two of the world’s largest mega cities, Delhi and Beijing for the period 2011-2017, reveals that although annual averages for Delhi were lower than Beijing until 2014, a systematic declining trend for Beijing is visible which is indiscernible in Delhi. To inform action at subnational levels in India, this paper estimates the exposure to air pollution and its impact on deaths, disease burden, and life expectancy in every state of India in 2017. Widespread fog over the Indo-Gangetic Plains and possible links to boreal winter teleconnections

Study suggest footprint of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and conventional Eurasian (EU) circulation patterns linked to anticyclonic circulation aloft over the IGP region. The planetary-scale teleconnection pathways offer new dynamical insights into comprehending widespread IGP fog scenario, which have been hitherto perceived mostly from a regional context. Spatial Patterns of Subseasonal Eddy Momentum and Heat Transport and its Probable Role in the Interannual Variability of Extratropical to Tropical Interaction during the Summer Monsoon Season

The current study uses a co-spectral analysis to study the horizontal and vertical structures of eddy heat and momentum transport during the monsoon season (June to September) over the Indian region. The co-spectral composite shows significant interannual variability of north-south eddy transport. Analysis suggesting vital role of global teleconnection patterns on eddy transports and its variability. Since the eddy transport is manifasted by the Rossby wave breaking through the subtropical Jetstream fluctuation. It is well known that such fluctuations can potentially impact the monsoonal low-frequency variability. Current study links such a modulation of eddy forcing by lowfrequency extratropical teleconnections. (Mahesh Kalshetti, Rajib Chattopadhyay, Phani M. Krishna and A.K. Sahai, IITM Research Report No. RR-144, December, 2018)
