Urban-NSM Project Closure Meeting (20.3.2026)

IITM successfully conducted the Urban-NSM Project Closure Meeting on 20th March 2026 at Hotel Tip Top International, Pune.

Initiated in 2018, the Urban-NSM project represents a collaborative consortium effort among the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Over the course of eight years, the project has made significant progress in advancing scientific research toward operational applications, with a focus on delivering actionable solutions for end users. The project successfully developed early warning systems for extreme events, including rainfall, urban flooding, and air pollution, across multiple cities in India. The closure meeting was convened to present the project’s key outcomes, achievements, and deliverables to stakeholders, domain experts, and consortium partners.

During the meeting, Director, IITM, Dr. Suryachandra Rao, highlighted the major components and achievements of the project and expressed appreciation to all partners for their contributions during his welcome address. He also outlined the future directions for sustaining and expanding the project outcomes.

Expert remarks from representatives of IITM, ARAI, CAQM, PMC, PCMC, and Atria University emphasized the societal relevance and long-term impact of the project. This was followed by detailed technical presentations covering project overview, air quality forecasting and decision support systems, emission inventory development, and the project’s cyberinfrastructure. A dedicated brainstorming session with stakeholders, including PMC, PCMC and SPPU, provided valuable insights into user requirements and future enhancements.

The meeting concluded successfully, marking the culmination of a significant collaborative effort in strengthening urban environmental management. The organizers extended sincere gratitude to all stakeholders and contributors for their continued support and engagement.
