IITM celebrated its 55^th Foundation Day on 17^th November 2016. Prof. S.K. Dube, Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Jaipur and Prof. P.C. Joshi, Retired Scientist, SAC, Ahmedabad was the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor respectively on this occasion.

On this occasion various awards were presented to the scientists, students, scientific, technical, Administrative support and other staff of the Institute. The third Golden Jubilee Award 2016 was given to Dr. A.K. Sahai and Dr. C. Gnanaseelan for their outstanding contribution in the field of Atmosphere, Weather and Climate Science. Dr. Ananthakrishnan Award for the Best Ph.D. thesis for the year 2016 was felicitated to Dr. C.K. Jena for his thesis entitled “High Resolution NOx Emission estimates for India based on Satellite measurements and Regional Chemistry Transport Model”  The Annual Silver Jubilee Award for the best research paper published in peer reviewed journal for the year 2015 was presented to Ojha Sayantani and C. Gnanaseelan for their research paper entitled "Tropical Indian Ocean subsurface temperature variability and the forcing mechanisms”  published in Climate Dynamics, Vol.44, May 2015, DOI:10.1007/s00382-014-2379-y, 2447-2462. The Best Student Research Paper Award for 2015 was presented to Ms. Priya P. for her paper entitled “Impacts of Indo-Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies on the summer monsoon circulation and heavy precipitation over Northwest India–Pakistan region during 2010” published in the Journal of Climate, 28, May 2015, DOI:10.1175/JCLI-D-14-00595.1, 3714-3730 by Priya P. et.al.

Smt. S.B. Patankar, Shri S.M. Thorat, Shri K.D. Barne and Shri V.V. Bamble received the Excellent Performance Award for the year 2015 for the Scientific, Administrative, Technical Support and Multi-Tasking Staff, respectively at the hands of Dr. R. Krishnan, Director, IITM.  From this year onward IITM started an Award comprising a citation and a reward of relevant books worth Rs. 7500/- for research fellows for their performance in the pre-PhD course work.  This award was given to research fellows Mrs. Dipti Hingmire  and Mr. Abhishek Gupta.

On this occasion Prof. C.K. Shum, Ohio State University delivered Prof. P. R. Pisharoty Distinguished Lecture on the topic "Improved Estimates of 20th and early 21st century global sea level rise."
